DVCNews Debates: Renting reservation vs renting points

Renting has grown into a popular method for getting rid of Disney Vacation Club points that the owner cannot use.  Third-party agents like DVCRequest.com have emerged to make the process very painless for owners, while avenues like eBay, Craig's List and other Internet listings are also options.

But to the owner looking to maximize the value from their points, another option is to secure a reservation during a period of peak demand and then look for a renter looking to take that specific reservation.  The market for a single reservation is undoubtedly smaller, but high demand combined with low cost during some DVC seasons can increase profits.

However, given the already limited availabilty during these high-demand periods, speculative renting may hurt fellow owners who are ready and willing to use their points for the same period.  Some rental avenues--like the DISboards--have strict guidelines against renting existing reservations.
